24.05.2008 Kyiv Unable to Stop Azovmash
BC Azovmash Mariupol became the 2007/2008 Ukrainian Superleague Champions, having defeated BC Kyiv 84:79 in Game 4 of the best-of-five series.
Azovmash had a strong start to the contest, getting an 8:0 lead early on. Kyiv’s Artur Drozdov hit a triple, but the fire was not extinguished, as the hosts continued to roll, making it a 17:3 game with two minutes to go in the first quarter. Kyiv fought back, reducing the margin to 11 at the end of the frame.
A three from Josh Davis made it a 4-point game with under four minutes to go in the second, but Azovmash managed to extend their advantage to 7 towards the end of the half.
Mariupol’s Robert Archibald made things look nasty for Kyiv as he drained a deuce to make it a 60:47 game in the third frame. The visitors once again reduced the gap to single digits, setting the 67:59 at the end of the stretch.
In a do-or-die situation, Kyiv improved their game in the 4th quarter, little by little getting within reach from Azovmash. A free throw by Drozdov made it a 2-point game with less than 3 minutes left on the clock, but Mariupol kept the visitors four points away with a minute left.
At this point Tomas Delininkaitis drained a huge three, burying Kyiv’s fantastic season.
Mariupol’s Panagiotis Liadellis had a game-high 22 points.
Kyiv’s captain Artur Drozdov finished the loss with a 21-points, 10-rebound double-double.
