History

BC Kyiv was founded in 1999 by the Olympic gold medalist, champion of Europe, USSR and Greece Alexander Volkov, who had been the first Ukrainian player to join the NBA in the late 80-s and who is currently the President of the Ukrainian Basketball Federation. Former players Vitaliy Khomenko, Alexander Salnikov and Galina Melnichenko also took active part in founding the team.

Alexander Kovalenko became the club’s first head coach and during the first season it participated in the Corac Cup, NEBL and the Ukrainian Superleague. With Curtis McCants and Stanislav Medvedenko on the roster, (he later went on to win two NBA Titles with the Los Angeles Lakers) the team won the Ukrainian Superleague, reached the Korac Cup round robin and the NEBL Final Four.

Two more Olympic champions joined the organization in the 2001/2002 season. Igors Miglinieks became the head coach while Rimas Kurtinaitis was the vice-president also playing for the club. The result of their combined effort was another Superleague Silver set, but Kyiv fell short of re-appearing in the NEBL Final Four.

BC Kyiv claimed Superleague Bronze in the 2002/2003 season with guard Viacheslav Ievstratenko receiving the MVP title. Miglinieks quit his job and was replaced by Vitaliy Lebedintsev, who only lasted till the winter time. Hennadiy Zashchuk was appointed the interim head coach, but was also replaced by Renato Pasquali in January 2004.

The Italian specialist brought Kyiv to its third Superleague Silver set. Another season success was the organization of the FIBA Europe All Star Game.

One of the most successful seasons for the Club was in 2005/2006 when players Lamarr Greer, Marcus Norris, Marcelo Nicola, Ioannis Giannoulis were on the team. Together with the coaching staff, they brought Kyiv to the silver medals of FIBA EuroCup and the Championship title in the Ukrainian Superleague.

The following season the Wolves, (Kyiv's unofficial name), again advanced into the FIBA EuroCup Final Four, which they got a chance to host, once again getting a set of medals - this time Bronze.

In the 2006/2007 season
Viktor Berezhnoy was Kyiv’s head coach at the start of the season. But he failed to lead the club past the FIBA EuroCup round robin and resigned. Berezhnoi was replaced by Tomo Mahoric, who added one more trophy to the Wolves’ collection- the Ukrainian Cup. He also claimed another Silver set in the Superleague Finals.

Kyiv was promoted to the ULEB Cup in the 2007/2008 season and had a fantastic start to it. After defeating Italian Benetton, French Pau, Belgian Telindus Oostende, Kyiv nearly missed the Final 8 stage.

Sasa Obradovic became BC Kyiv’s new head coach in the summer of 2008. No doubts, he  helped his team to reach new heights. And even when in the middle of the season club management decided to cut almost all foreigners, Sasa showed, that with Ukrainian roster he can beat big European clubs. BC Kyiv reached Eurochallenge quarterfinal and took 4th spot in national championship.

Young players proved, that they are talented and can play on a good European level. But club was trying to grow up not only players, but also good domestic coach. For sure, one of the biggest prospects is Vitaliy Cherniy, who was working as a head coach of juniors and in 2009/10 season will try to show, that he is ready to lead senior team.
